The Savoy Ballroom
The Savoy Ballroom, also known as the unrivaled dance floor during the Harlem Renaissance, served as the ultimate recreational location for dancing, listening to grand orchestras, and watching competitions take place. It first opened on March 12, 1926, thanks to Moe Gale, Charles Buchanan, and Charles Galewski; they obtained the reputation as the best entertainment providers during the 1920’s. The Savoy Ballroom held everyone’s attention for being the finest dance hall in Harlem calling it, “The World’s Most Beautiful Ballroom” and “The Home of Happy Feet” as time passed. S.S.
The interior—with an ocean of space, retractable stages, and bouncy floors, —created the perfect place for dance competitions. Styles such as the jitterbug, lindy hop, and swing were performed with energy, watched with amusement, and judged with accuracy. So much footwork took place on the floor that it had to be renovated every three years. The always-crowded Savoy Ballroom was unbeatable when it came to dancing on weekends.S.S.
The Harlem Globetrotters
The Harlem Globetrotters began as the "Savoy Big Five" back in 1926 by a man named Abe Saperstein at the age of twenty-four. From this original team, The Harlem Globetrotters was initiated and they immediately began to advertise themselves through events and well known places such as the Savoy Ballroom, however some of their efforts failed.Their first successful game happened a year later in 1927 where they played local teams in front of an audience of 300. They wanted to represent where they came from by having New York on their jerseys along with some sponsors and from then on their recognition started to flourish and they began to travel. S.S.
They had an original, yet unusual style of play when they weren't concerned with the competition. For their viewers entertainment, they would have comical instances and clown around in their play. The number of spectators they had increased more and more each game, and their great popularity inspired basketballers all over New York especially because they were on of the few African American teams know. Since they debuted in Harlem, many people around there engaged basketball games at neighborhood courts as a fun activity around that time. Their humorous gradient diminished as they their popularity increased. S.S.
